Meeting with Dannil, probably our oldest wizard - 2002-05-20

Personal Details:

Q: How did you get your name?
A: I ripped it off from an obscure character in a Robert Jordan novel =)

Q: How old are you?
A: On the mud, I'm the oldest of the active characters, only Ulme, Nemesis and Simon are older as far as I know. By age in this context I mean amount of time since character creation, not sum of logged in time.

Q: What level are you?
A: 350.

Q: How would you describe yourself?
A: Incredibly skilled, witty, intelligent, and humble beyond belief! Seriously, that's a difficult question. I try to be as friendly as possible, even if someone annoys me (although that's a rare occurance). I'm always happy to enter a debate on most any subject, something which have annoyed a lot of people =)

Q: Where do you live?
A: I live in Karlstad, Sweden.

Q: How long have you been logging on to AoD?
A: I'm not quite sure, but I recently found a file in my home directory dating back to March 1998, so I would guess a little before that.

Mudding in general:

Q: How did you first get in contact with Ages of Despair?
A: Ulme, the original creator of Ages of Despair was an old friend of mine from another mud called 3 Kingdoms, or 3k for short. He contacted me asking if I wanted to help with this new mud he was creating, and here I am =)

Q: Are you a normal mudder, or do you seldom log on?
A: I'd say I'm a "burst mudder". For long periods of time, I'm next to totally inactive. But every once in a while, I enter a "burst" where I log on constantly, and ususally I'm relatively productive in that time.

Q: Have you met any fellow mudders in RL?
A: The only AoD mudder I've met in real life was Ulme, back in 1997 in Borlänge.

Game Specific:

Q: What was your first kill and if you ever died, what was the first thing that killed you?
A: My first kill (with my wizard character) was "An evil daemon, looking for processes to kill" which was a simple test NPC I created. My kill with my player character was probably some innocent mouse or snake from the hills east of Loriah. None of my characters have ever died.

Q: Who is your favourite and most hated npc respectively?
A: Hmm. My favourite NPC would probably be the Woodland apprentice (*blush*), and the most hated... well, I don't know =) I don't think I really hate any NPCs.

Q: What is the most funniest/strangest thing that ever happened to you on AoD?
A: Hmm. I'm not quite sure. I can't recall anything specific...

Q: Do you have any piece of equipment you just can't live without?
A: That would probably be my ahkh, a wizard tool I created which contains a lot of useful functions.

Q: Do you have a "special place" where you like to hang out, A private corner so to speak?
A: I guess that would be my workroom, located in a tower in the Palace of Thornsville.

Q: What is the best thing about Ages of Despair?
A: Hmm, another difficult question. There are many good things about AoD. I know this will sound cheesy, but I'll have to say that the best thing about AoD is its players. They have been very helpful to me during design and coding of the Woodland mages guild, providing lots of constructive critisism and ideas.

Q: What is the worst thing about Ages of Despair?
A: I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but I'd say it's reincarnation. I designed the Woodland mages to be fun to advance in, playing through level by level striving to become an archmage. To me, it is a bit disappointing to see people reincarnatee into the guild with millions and millions of free exp, instantly reach level 50, max all skills, and say "How do I cast spells?".

Q: Is there any advice you would like to give to new players that have just entered our world?
A: My best advice is try to find the answers for your questions in the helpfiles first, and if you can't find the answer there, THEN ask.

Other / Strange:

Q: Were you ever convicted of a crime?
A: With my wiz character, I once submitted a piece of code to Balance review before I submitted it to QC review, which I got in trouble over. That's about the only thing I can remember right now.

Q: How many friends/family play?
A: Since Ulme isn't active anymore, I'd have to say none.

Q: Favourite quote?
A: Sorry, I can't remember any clever quotes =)

Q: Is there anything else you would like to mention about yourself or your life?
A: Not that I can think of right now. If there's something someone wants to know, they can always ask me later.

Q: If you could remove one of the questions from this interview and replace it with another one, which would you remove and what would you replace it with?
A: The questions are fine.

Q: Do I have your permission to make this information public on the People of AoD website or any other media?
A: Yes, you do.
