An interview with Lothar - 2002-12-26

Personal details:

Q: How did you get your name?
A: Well, I was doing some thinking about a good name to start with and I thought up Lothar. Little did I know, it was the name of a SNL character. I think I got it from WC2 but forgot about it really.

Q: How old are you?
A: According to my information, 2 years, 18 weeks, 3 days 7 hours old. Of course, it'd be longer if I didn't get disconnected. hehe

Q: What level are you?
A: I'm a level 75 paladin, level 48 cleric. Maybe not the most powerful player on the mud, but I hope I'm one of the more amusing ones.

Q: How would you describe yourself?
A: Hmm, that's a tough question. I'd probably frighten a few people with a rl description so I'll do my character.
A: Fairly high up the ranks of angels, I've pledged to use my powers against the growing tied of evil (especially the barons, grrr!) that has been overwhelming the land around Loriah. Already, many foes have fallen to the justice I have dealt by myself and others who have joined in my crusade.

Q: Where do you live?
A: My current place of inhabitance is within the mountaintops around Loriah. The body I leave behind in the 'login room' is just a shell to contain my essence upon the world. Without my presence within it, it is but a lifeless object that may be gazed upon (if you wish to do so). However, things done to said body is noted within my mind (I know who and what people have done to it!) so please refrain from 'kick me' signs and such or I may visit you once I return to it for some much needed butt-kicking of said person. =P

Q: How long have you been logging on to AoD?
A: I've been a resident of this land for a long time. Starting out as a tabaxi, I learned that being a multi-class warrior/priest/mage and joining into the guilds knight/cleric/druid/healer/psionicist/woodland, you learn very, very slowly. So after my reincarnation, I've learned from the errors of my ways and only multi-class'ed into warrior/priest and joining into knight/druid/healer. Anyway, my existence in AoD is long and distinguished. I've been seen fit enough to becoming an angel paladin/cleric and defending the injustices out there when I have the time to do so.

Mudding in general:

Q: How did you first get in contact with Ages of Despair?
A: I was bored one day and decided to go join a MUD. I've seen them before and watched others play a bit and thought they were interesting. So one day in March of 1999 (I think!) I searched through Yahoo and eventually found that AoD was listed and a new one. Going through the link provided, I read up about what the world was like and thought that it would be enjoyable. And that's how it started.

Q: Do you regularly play or wiz on any other MUDs?
A: No, I do not play on any other MUDs currently or even wiz. I get hooked on something every once in a while. StarCraft: BroodWars, Diablo 2, Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction, anime (That collection is growing bigger and bigger, hehe). However, I do not abandon things very fast. I'll probably be playing on AoD for at least another couple of years.

Q: Are you a normal mudder or do you seldom log on?
A: Seldom log on? If you have to ask that, you don't know me that well. hehe
A: I'm constantly logged on if possible, but I doubt I'm a normal mudder either. Hmm, this is kind of difficult to answer but anyway nobody knows when I'm actually at my computer. Sometimes I just have the telnet window open so I see what's happening but I don't do anything to interact upon it. Some very interesting things occur occasionally at those times. heh heh

Q: Have you met any fellow mudders in RL?
A: Of course! I got my cousin playing it. He's Shadowfang. If you mean others, yes to that too but if you mean other players that play here, I don't think so yet.

Game specific:

Q: What was your first kill and if you ever died, what was the first thing that killed you?
A: First thing I killed would be the mouse on Rondaran Heights, that I know. First thing that killed me though, that one is tough. It could have been the bear in the heights, but probably a kobold of some sort on the farm. Actually, I believe it was Choko, the kobold shaman. I could be wrong, can anyone verify that? heh

Q: Did you ever get killed by a ("the") horrible creature?
A: Yes, yes and yes. I know I got killed by him at least twice. hehe
A: But eventually, I got my revenge and killed him instead.

Q: Who is your favourite and most hated npc respectively?
A: My favourite NPC would be Moserath. Even though he is a dragon, he is willing to defend the land against a powerful evil force. I'd explain in more detail, but I would get into some trouble if I do. However, I wish that Moserath would kindly lend me some of the equipment he has obtained so that I may use it against the foes of the land.
A: Maendon! He is a scourge upon the land! I have defeated Morchan in combat, but Maendon has escaped my wrath! Everytime I come close to mortally wounded this foul creature, he teleports me away from his presence so that he may recuperate from my attacks. Also, that cursed altar's presence near his quarters drains my health and damages my thoughts so I cannot focus has kept him safe as well. Many of my fellow warriors have fallen to this abomination, trying to cleanse his evil emanations from the world for which I grieve. However, I shall avenge them some day and bring light upon the darkness that thrives there.

Q: What is the funniest/strangest thing that ever happened to you on AoD?
A: That would probably be when this zombie cow fell from the sky into the room I was in killing little creatures on Avalon. It was a shock, as I had found out that it was a fairly large monster (6 mil exp I believe) but it disappeared before I could do much more than gasp in shock.

Q: Hmm a zombie cow, any idea where that came from?
A: Some wizard had it on their finger. I cannot remember who it was though.

Q: Do you have any piece of equipment you just can't live without?
A: That would have to be my divine shield, granted to me for my dedication to the paladin guild. A powerful artifact, it has seen me through my days of battling my foes, from kobolds to Morchan. Without it's protective powers, I would have fallen in battle long ago, my body crumbled into dust and the land destroyed around me.

Q: Do you have a "special place" where you like to hang out, a private corner so to speak?
A: My "Special Place" would be at my home of course. There, I dwell upon the events that I have witnesses, as well as the trophies I have gathered from my battles along the course of my life. As well that I can relieve my hearing of the cries of the people asking for aid of equipment and coin, or journeying with them into the realms creatures that I would easily defeat for the purpose of them learning while doing nothing.

Q: How much of your time on AOD do you spend hanging out or chatting compared with exping?
A: I chat while I exp. However hanging out, I do basically all the time. Much have I learned unbeknownst among the other residents in the fair city of Loriah._

Q: What is the best thing about Ages of Despair?
A: That would probably have to be the how everyone interacts with each other. You've got access to many channels to have different discussions with others. As well as the fact that many people that play think somewhat similarly to how you do. In a game of SC, you don't have that. People curse, yell, complain about how bad a player you are (even when you are doing way better than they are but you didn't come help defend his base) as well as backstab you. Here, people seem more open, it is probably due to the fact that you create the character as an extension of yourself. Maybe not your whole true self, but a part of you that wishes to be expressed or to escape from the realities of the modern world and into a fantasy setting where you can be whatever, whenever you wish.

Q: What is the worst thing about Ages of Despair?
A: That would have to be the people who expect you to do stuff for them for no reason at all. Of course, that occurs in any game where you need to create some kind of character and gain them some power. It is something that you cannot stop, but can be minimized to some extent.

Q: Do you have any driving ambitions on AOD? Is there anything that you want to achieve or perhaps something that you have already achieved?
A: Well, I have achieved several of my goals. One to become the most powerful tank within the game. I am sure I reached that (even though Sparhawk reincarnated into paladin recently, hehe) but there is still more for me to do. I would enjoy being able to defeat some of the other mobs within the game, as well as reach the plaque for the top 5 players. When you lose your goals within anything, you lose your willingness to work towards something and you drift about the place wondering what you should do.

Q: Is there any advice you would like to give to new players that just entered our world?
A: Advice. There is lots of advice I could give, but here is some of the most important things they should know.
A: 1. Don't go around begging for stuff, it gets irritating and usually does not achieve any results.
A: 2. Gain experience on your own or within a party of players where you are actually doing something useful. Being a level 5-10 player and asking someone over level 100 is just silly.
A: 3. Read the rule book you get when you log on. Easy enough to understand. After you join a guild (depending on your class), find out your guild channel (try 'tune in' for all the channels or ask on the newbie channel), questions appropriate for your guild should be asked there first. Otherwise, ask on the newbie channel.
A: 4. Final piece of advice I can give is to have fun playing your character. Going for the best combination to gain experience isn't always fun for everyone. I've always been a knight or paladin (knight was changed into paladin) and almost never had a good exp rate till I earned a lot of experience for myself. However, I did enjoy my time doing so and that's what counts.

Other / Strange:

Q: Were you ever convicted of a crime?
A: Yep. (tell arwyn crimes of lothar)
A: It wasn't a really fair punishment I thought, but I took it anyway. However, it was worth it for the fun it brought after it occurred. 6-7 players ended up dying because I put a burning bush to block an entrance out of the tower. It was deemed illegal since I was not holding the tower however, but it was still fun. It also sparked a fairly large discussion for a while which was fun to debate in.

Q: How many friends/family play?
A: Just Shadowfang and I unless you want to count the friends I've made here. =P

Q: Favourite quote?
A: Well, it use to be the Solamnic oath, but at this moment, I do not have one.
A: It's from Dragonlance if you did not know.

Q: Whats the Solamnic oath?
A: Ok, after looking for it for about 10 minutes, I found it. I know what it is in English, but I wanted the Solamnic words to it too. hehe
A: Est Sularus oth Mithas - My Honor is My Life

Q: What music are you listening to now?
A: I don't really listen to music. At my computer if I don't have to pay too much attention, I'll watch anime while mudding. Otherwise, I'll play some videogame music while playing (from some squaresoft games) or anime sound tracks. In the car, I'll listen to the radio as long as it is not rap or country basically.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to mention about yourself or your life?
A: Hmm, I do enjoy listening to classical music (which some people don't seem to appreciate anymore) as well as reading my books. I need more books to read though, I haven't purchased any for quite a while. But other than that, probably not much to mention that I'd care to.

Q: If you could remove one of the questions from this interview and replace it with another one, which would you remove and what would you replace it with?
A: I don't know, I forget what all the questions were. hehe
A: But probably don't need to replace a thing. I could lengthen some of my answers, but I didn't want to cover much more pages.

Q: Who would you like me to interview next, and why?
A: Hmm, Shadowfang if you haven't. Why? Just because. hehe

Q: If I do that interview, is there a specific question that you want me to ask?
A: Why did it take you so long to get hooked on AoD you silly head!

Q: Do I have your permission to make this information public on the People of AoD webiste or any other media?
A: Sure, sure. There's nothing incriminating in there, is right? lol
