Meeting with Ulme, retired god and creator of AoD - 2002-05-20

Personal Details:

Q: How did you get your name?
A: Ulme is my RL nickname (or one of them, rather). I think it's taken from a cartoon viking that used to be on Swedish television when I was pretty young.

Q: How old are you?
A: 13 weeks, 4 days, 8 hours, 27 minutes on here :) soon 27 in real life.

Q: What level are you?
A: 1000, both here and in real life ;)

Q: How would you describe yourself?
A: Hmmm. I am kind and forgiving, a bit lazy when it comes to work that I have no passion for. Unfortunately that is what happened here on AoD - I lost my passion for it a few years ago and resigned. I have a hard time handling failure. I joke a lot. Oh, and I rock ;)

Q: Where do you live?
A: In my workroom, specially designed to grant comfort to my lazy self :) In real life I currently live in Stockholm - Sweden.

Q: How long have you been logging on to AoD?
A: Ever since I managed to configure the driver and the library for the first time... now when was that? Probably around -97 or so :)

Mudding in general:

Q: How did you first get in contact with Ages of Despair?
A: I was in vacation in Spain and came up with the idea of mixing good ideas from existing muds that I liked together with my own ideas :) I wrote them down on a few pieces of paper, more and more as I came up with more ideas. Eventually when I came back home I started to work on it. I guess that's how I got on contact with it =)

Q: What does it feel like to be the god from which all life originated?
A: Oh did you just create that question for me? I feel honored, hehe. To be completely honest, I am proud that AoD has become so popular - even if it perhaps has become less popular lately than it used to be. But I also feel guilty that I haven't helped out as much as I should have - but I can't work on something that bores me to death :) I still love logging on and chatting, even though I don't code anymore.

Q: Are you a normal mudder, or do you seldom log on?
A: I log on pretty rarely, usually when I am bored and start to look for people to talk with. Other than that, I log on briefly from time to time and check my mail and sometimes the boards.

Q: Have you met any fellow mudders in RL?
A: Let me see... about 20-25 people that I didn't meet in RL first, I met through the mud. That includes people from other muds than AoD too though.
Or mostly from other muds, when I think about it :)

Q: Ok, I know you have lots of episodes from those meetings... anything especially crazy you would like to share?
A: Tough one...
I would say the one time in Lulea, northern Sweden, when the guys I was visiting got arrested for attempted robbery. All they were really doing was playing terrorists with their masquerade clothes/toy guns outside a store while waiting for 2 other guys that were going to buy their masquerade costumes for the night in the same store :) It was fun to hear about how between 4 to 6 police cars and a helicopter had participated in that thing ;)
Actually they didn't get arrested, bad word. They got interrogated though.

Game Specific:

Q: What was your first kill and if you ever died, what was the first thing that killed you?
A: Oh I have no idea... One of the first might've been Simon, both killer and victim.

Q: Did you ever get killed by a ("the") horrible creature?
A: I think so, with my player character.

Q: Who is your favourite and most hated npc respectively?
A: Favourite...
Ulme looks at you.
You blush.
You say: Why thank you.
Most hated, dunno... the horrible creature mentioned previously perhaps =)

Q: What is the most funniest/strangest thing that ever happened to you on AoD?
A: Well, I would have to say the numerous nights when I have been drunk and online and just talking with people I have no clue of who they are. I remember arena fights, c4-bouts and stuff like that.

Q: Do you have any piece of equipment you just can't live without?
A: Yes indeed :) Largo the Gnome. He is my best friend.
But he is not really living - thus equipment.

Q: Do you have a "special place" where you like to hang out, A private corner so to speak?
A: My workroom :) It's the only place on the mud where I can be sure that I get my privacy.

Q: What is the best thing about Ages of Despair?
A: There are a lot of nice players (and wizards) here that are fun to talk with. I have some old friends here that I can speak with from time to time, whenever we are logged on at the same time.

Q: What is the worst thing about Ages of Despair?
A: That is one question that I would like to keep unanswered. It's not about disliking one or more people - that's for sure.

Q: Is there any advice you would like to give to new players that have just entered our world?
A: Yeah be nice to people, and the people here will be nice to you :)

Other / Strange:

Q: Were you ever convicted of a crime?
A: Nope :)

Q: How many friends/family play?
A: Well I am not sure how many that still plays. I would count Lalli and Deathstalkr, but I doubt that more people than that, that I know in rl, play here still :)

Q: Favourite quote?
A: Favourite quote, from the Simpsons:
"There is NO emoticon for what I am feeling right now"

Q: Is there anything else you would like to mention about yourself or your life?
A: If people are interested, feel free to ask :)

Q: If you could remove one of the questions from this interview and replace it with another one, which would you remove and what would you replace it with?
A: I guess I would remove the one about what I disliked with AoD, since thats the only one I didn't want to answer. Now what question would I add? Hm. Hmm. Hmmm. Ok clueless :P Sorry

Q: Do I have your permission to make this information public on the People of AoD website or any other media?
A: Well sure, if you add this banner to... No? Ok then go ahead.
